THE LAST RESORT

[English version below]

Getting out of Kathmandu is always a relief.
Leaving behind smog, traffic and chaos, going deep into the nature and the quiet of the valley is a panacea for body and mind.

Last week we decided to spend one day and one night at The Last Resort, a structure located 12 km from the Tibetan border, surrounded by jungle and forest and placed on the top of a gorge where the powerful river Bhote Kosi flows. The complex is well known for its many attractions which include, among the others, bungee jumping, rafting, canyoning and mountain biking.

Wake-up time at 5am, meeting in the centre of the city and four hours of trip on a semi-crumbling bus (sitting inside, luckily). The Last Resort is without any doubt a high-standard place, but it doesn't attract only tourists: on our bus, in fact, there are more Nepalese than westerners and for all the duration of the travel we have to be lumbered with their traditional (and loud) songs.

We clamber up on narrow dirt roads running along steep ravines and every now and then the reckless driving of the busdriver makes us shake quite a bit. We pass a handful of roadblocks (the soldiers always jump in looking for hidden people trying to cross the border), flanking dozens of waterfalls, clearing some streams, bypassing a few landslides until we finally reach our destination. When the bus stops, the Resort is on the opposite side of the canyon: the only way to get there is to walk on a long and dizzy suspension bridge. While we proceed firmly clung to the handrail, caravans of Nepalese go across without fear, carrying on their shoulders piles of stones and other supplies.

We set ourselves inside cosy double tents, protected by a metal roof and furnished with comfortable beds (just those mattresses are worth the trip!) and even two small beach chairs. The structure is very welcoming, plunged into the forest but full of comforts: buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinners, garden bar with armchairs and sofas, hot showers (!), spa and massage centre. Heaven, in a word (only IZ is missing with his ukulele...).

Although tickled by the numerous adventure activities, we don't give in to temptation and we relax the entire weekend, promising ourselves to come back in the future for a surge of adrenalin. While someone is getting a massage, the day rolls on with naps, walks and readings; in the late afternoon we decide to go for the sauna and the immersion in an open air rocky pot, closing the evening with the dinner and some rest of the sofas.

At 10pm the deluge starts. Thunders, rain and lightnings as we've never seen them before here. We reach the tents completely soaked, but no-one of us seems to care. We observe the fireflies lighting up the night and we fall asleep with the sound of rain.
